The idea that 5 year olds have boyfriends and girlfriends really throws me off. So many people blame it on media but I blame it on the other children. You see some of them have older siblings. My advice have an only child if you don’t want them being known as the “bad influence”. I had to tell one of my boys today that he doesn’t own another girl. You would think maybe as his kindergarten teacher I am his first crush. But I am pretty sure he loves another girl.He always holds her lunchbox and doesn’t allow other boys to play with her at recess. After explaining it to him, he kissed my arm told me I was cute and ran away. When I was younger “Look Who’s Talking” came out. And while all the children were talking about the tadpoles in the opening credits I made sure to tell them they were wrong. You see my older sister taught me at a young age that those “tadpoles” were actually sperm, so of course I had to tell the rest of my school the truth. Needless to say their parents weren’t too pleased and called my mom. Ironically enough I was a bad influence. One of my new students told us she was going to come to school the next day without a shirt on. Not sure where it came from or why she would say this. Maybe she saw it on MTV. Or maybe she heard her older sister say she did it. The kid next to her overheard this, lifted his shirt and flashed us. Ah another day in Kindergarten.

Apparently there’s a new pyramid. I haven’t really memorized the new one but it’s on my to-do list. My students are only learning plane shapes right now ie squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. As soon as we move on to more dimensional shapes like pyramids I plan to tie in health and geometry. While some of the kids in my class skip lunches all together, most are eating dessert before they eat their meal. At times I correct this “bad” habit and other times I don’t say anything. I mean life is too short, right?, so why not eat dessert first. Although they might not be able to sit in their seats after all that sugar for very long, they tend to forget what I said 5 minutes ago, and when prompted on Monday what they did over the weekend I often hear, “I don’t remember”. Some how one of the students remembered that I ate cookies weeks ago and remembered that I bring salads at times.The other day I brought in whole wheat chocolate chips cookies that I made from scratch. Sorry I need to brag because I’m not savvy in the kitchen. It’s hard not to blame that
on my mom and grandma, two people and I’m quoting them,that “burn water”. The children all seemed to be loving them and of course I was eating them too. One of the kids says to me,” You are always eating and you are a cookie monster”. Mind you I thought it was the first time I’ve eaten cookies at school. He proceeds to say, “but you are also healthy because you eat lettuce.” I wonder if he knew that when I was about 5 I’d eat a cookie and an apple at the same time, convinced the fruit would knock out the fat part of the cookie. I wish that were true. I also would stand on the scale have my mom check my weight, then suck in my tummy and ask her to check it again. Obviously over the years I eat less cookies, more fruits, and when I do eat the cookies they are whole wheat. And the next time I have one it definitely won’t be in front of that kid !
